Homeless man catches fire near I-8 freeway

SAN DIEGO - An investigation is underway into how a homeless man caught fire near the Interstate 8 freeway in the Morena neighborhood of San Diego Wednesday night.

The transient man told San Diego Fire-Rescue that he was asleep on Hancock Street, near Kurtz Street, when he was set on fire sometime before 10:30 p.m. A Good Samaritan with a fire extinguisher helped him put the flames out, police said.

The patient was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center with second-degree burns. His name was not released.

The San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team is investigating if someone set him on fire or if he accidentally caught fire while asleep.
