Four to 9-foot sets are likely today, followed by 6 to 11-foot sets Saturday, 5 to 9-foot sets Sunday and 4 to 7-foot sets on Monday, according to the National Weather Service. The agency issued a high surf advisory for San Diego County beaches from 3 this morning to 6 p.m. Labor Day.

"There will likely be long intervals of 20 to 35 minutes between the larger waves," according to an NWS advisory. "These larger waves could produce breaking waves across the entrance to Oceanside Harbor, wash over jetties and wash well up the beach and across low-lying sea walls and parking lots."

The high surf could also produce dangerous rip currents throughout the holiday weekend.

The large swell behind the high surf results from wave energy generated by a storm in the South Pacific and Tropical Storm Ileana off the Mexican coast, NWS forecasters said.
