SAN DIEGO - Two suspected car thieves were detained in San Diego following a high-speed pursuit that began in the Los Angeles area.

Authorities began pursuing a man and a woman in a black Toyota Solara shortly before 12:30 p.m. in the Norwalk area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver refused to pull over for officers and left the Los Angeles area, sped through Orange County and entered San Diego County on southbound Interstate 5 at about 1 p.m.

CHP officials said the car reached speeds as high as 125 mph.

CHP officials said spike strips deployed on the freeway caused the vehicle to stop shortly before 1:20 p.m. on the center-divide of southbound Interstate 805 near state Route 54 in National City. Authorities surrounded the car and then detained the two suspected car thieves.

Officers said a nearby driver also ran over the spike strips and had their tires blown out as well.

No injuries or vehicle crashes were reported.
