Help sought in identifying Del Mar sexual assault suspect

Woman attacked at Del Mar Fairgrounds

DEL MAR, Calif. - Authorities asked the public on Wednesday for help in identifying a man sought on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman last month at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

The woman told investigators she met the man while waiting for a cab at the state-owned entertainment venue early on the evening of Sept. 30, according to sheriff's officials.

The pair conversed and then walked to a remote section of the fairgrounds, where the alleged assault occurred.

The woman, who suffered minor injuries during the encounter, described the assailant as a heavyset, roughly 5-foot-10-inch white man in his early to mid-20s, with short brown hair and a goatee. He was wearing glasses and a gray shirt with the word "Navy" on the front. A surveillance camera at the fairgrounds captured images of him.

Anyone who may be able to assist with the investigation was asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
