SAN DIEGO - A preliminary hearing was postponed Tuesday until Jan. 22 for a man accused of fatally stabbing an older man during an argument over methamphetamine in San Diego's Southcrest neighborhood.

Rafael Felipe Solano, 38, was arrested Oct. 1 at his San Diego County residence in connection with the Aug. 12 death of 51-year-old Eugene Smith, according to San Diego police Lt. Jorge Duran.

Solano -- held in lieu of $1 million bail -- is charged with murder and the use of a knife.

Smith was found with several stab wounds in the middle of 42nd Street, just south of Gamma Street, just before 5:15 p.m. on Aug. 12, Duran said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene about a half-hour later.

Investigators later learned Smith was involved in a fight with two other men, Duran said, adding that the others fled in a silver sedan as Smith collapsed in the street.
