SAN DIEGO - A man who shot a neighbor outside their Mountain View apartment complex nearly two years ago pleaded guilty Thursday to voluntary manslaughter.
Freddy Ovdulio Pacheco, 22, also admitted that he personally used a firearm in the Oct. 18, 2012, killing of 44-year-old Juan Carlos Martinez, a construction worker who lived in the area with his wife and children.
Pacheco be sentenced to 21 years in state prison on Sept. 25.
Deputy District Attorney Jalyn Wang said Pacheco fired five shots at the victim as he rode his bicycle home from running an errand about 7 p.m.
Martinez was hit twice, once in the buttocks and then in the back, which was the fatal shot. He died at the scene.
Pacheco was arrested three weeks later at his family's residence on South 35th Street.
The motive for the slaying was unclear, though the two men knew each other and may have had some sort of "falling-out," police said.
Witnesses testified during a preliminary hearing last year that they heard several shots outside the apartment complex, then saw a man in a dark coat and hat running toward a nearby alley.
