SAN DIEGO - A family of six was displaced Tuesday morning after a fire ripped through their home in City Heights the previous night.
The fire erupted at 3600 Van Dyke Avenue at 10:30 p.m. Monday.
Witnesses told 10News that a man saved his grandkids from the building and then tried to douse the flames with a garden house with help from a neighbor.
When firefighters arrived, much of the building was already destroyed.
The family was treated on scene and a family dog did not survive the blaze.
Next-door neighbor Elvia Diaz said the grandfather got the kids out of the house and then went back to try to stop the fire.
"He goes to the bedroom, get the children and take them," said Diaz.
