GoPro lost at sea recovered, returned to owner

Couple who found it turned to 10News for help

CARLSBAD, Calif. - A walk on the beach in Carlsbad is a daily routine for Jackie Brown and Mike Stilwell, but that routine was anything but when they found a GoPro camera wedged into the kelp.

"The first thing we wanted to do is see if we could find who owned it," Brown said. "We called GoPro to see if they keep any sort of record; they didn't, so that's when we turned to you guys."

Though the case was pretty beat up having been tossed in the surf for more than a month, the video on the camera still worked.

10News took the video and manipulated it to get a clearer picture of what was on it, and using the tools available to them, 10News assignment editors were able to dig up a phone number.

"I was shocked, I couldn't believe it," said Cameron Brantz, who told 10News he lost the camera while body surfing with friends in July.

The video and camera were returned, and Brantz added, "You know, it's cool to know that people in the community want to help."
