SAN DIEGO – A driver had to be pulled out of his SUV after rolling it on the transition ramp to Interstate 8 west late Wednesday night in San Diego’s Old Town neighborhood.

At around 11:30 p.m. a truck taking the ramp from Interstate 5 north to I-5 west lost control of his Suzuki SUV and overturned. According to witnesses, the impact was so strong it launched the driver into the backseat. The SUV came to rest in traffic.

Several Good Samaritans stopped their vehicles and immediately ran to help, this while cars were whizzing by.

“I pulled the keys out of the ignition, put it in park, opened the doors, put a neck brace on him made out of a towel to stabilize him,” said Andre Zeehandelaar, who pulled over right after the accident. “I kept him still, checked his pulse, checked his eyes.”

"While we were there about eight or 10 cars almost rammed us."

San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded and extricated the man from the SUV. He was transported to UC San Diego Medical Center with unknown injuries.

California Highway Patrol is investigating.
