SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  Investigators are searching for clues after the body of a shooting victim was found outside the Gompers Preparatory Academy campus early Friday morning.

San Diego Police swarmed the Chollas View area school just before 6 a.m., over reports of a man down in the area of Hilltop Drive and 47th Street. A school janitor located the body while he was putting up the school's flag, Lt. Todd Griffin said.

Police said the man appeared to have died from a gunshot wound. Police said gunshots were fired in the area of Hilltop Dr. toward the school. Multiple shell casings were also found. Lt. Griffin said the shooting appears to have taken place between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. overnight.

Police have identified the victim as Cherkeiray Devonte Jones. A suspect was not immediately identified.

No children were harmed during the incident. Gompers' vice principal told 10News that students are currently on Spring Break, though some still come to campus for extra help. He added that the only person on campus at the time was the school janitor who discovered the body.

Police have closed Hilltop Dr., between 47th St. and 48th St., as the investigation continues. Students coming to campus at this time are being advised to take Euclid Ave. around the investigation scene.

Another nearby school, Millennial Tech, was not affected by the incident. That campus is still open Friday.

Nearby, San Diego police are also investigating a homicide in the Mountain View area of San Diego, where another man was found in the street suffering from a gunshot. Police found James Gerald Arberry of San Diego in the 3700 block of Ocean View Boulevard Thursday night.

Arberry died at the scene.

Police said the incidents were not related, but they are investigating if any possible connections exist.
