SAN DIEGO -

A large-diameter gas pipe leaked Saturday and prompted evacuations in the Encanto neighborhood, fire officials said.

A few area residents in the vicinity of Treewood Street and Benson Avenue were evacuated following the leak, which was reported about 11:45 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher said.

"The two units adjacent from the involved unit have been evacuated," the dispatcher said.

It was unclear what caused the leak.

Fire crews were on scene along with San Diego Gas & Electric crews, but it was not known if the gas leak had been secured, the dispatcher said.
