SAN DIEGO - A gas line ruptured in near an elementary school in Mira Mesa late Tuesday evening.
The break happened around 10 p.m. Tuesday at Wagenheim Middle School, located at the intersection of Black Mountain Road and Gold Coast Drive.
Fire officials said a backhoe involved in a construction project on campus struck a 2.5-inch gas line and that when construction crews tried to shut the gas off, the line ruptured.
Officials said their gas meters, which test the presence of gas in the air, detected gas only 25 feet from where the rupture occurred. The nearest building, the school, was 40 feet away from the rupture.
There were no evacuations and crews were able to get the gas line repaired early Wednesday before school was scheduled to begin. There were no cancelations at the school.
