CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A gas line break at a construction site prompted a road closure and evacuation of an Eastlake-area strip mall Thursday afternoon.
The gas line break was reported at about 3:15 p.m. at a construction site along Eastlake Parkway. The incident forced Chula Vista police to close the intersection of Eastlake Parkway and Birch Road.
Police also shut down a stretch of Eastlake Parkway between Birch Road and Crossroads Street.
10News learned a backhoe working at a nearby construction project accidentally struck the gas line, causing the break.
San Diego Gas & Electric crews were sent to the scene, and an official told 10News it could be a few hours before the line is fixed.
SDG&E officials said the hot and windy weather is helping the gas dissipate and reducing the danger.
No injuries were reported, and police said no homes were evacuated as of 6:15 p.m.
10News learned the same gas line had a break further down Interstate 805 about a week ago, but that incident is not related to Thursday afternoon's break.
