Gas leak prompts evacuation at community college, partial closure of E Valley Parkway in Escondido

ESCONDIDO, Calif. - A gas leak prompted the closure of a busy business thoroughfare in eastern Escondido Monday.

East Valley Parkway between Rose Street and Midway Drive was closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic just before 10 a.m., according to Escondido police Sgt. Kevin Toth.

Escondido fire crews and San Diego Gas & Electric officials were investigating the leak.

Students, faculty and staff at the Palomar College Escondido Education Center on East Valley Parkway were evacuated due to the leak.

10News learned that several hundred students were taking their finals at the college when the evacuations were ordered.

At about 11:30 a.m., Escondido police said crews were able to resolve the situation, and East Valley Parkway was re-opened to pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

School officials said the campus would likely re-open at about 1 p.m.
