SAN DIEGO - A wayward fabric canopy got caught in overhead electrical lines Tuesday in a neighborhood near Marian Bear Memorial Park, causing an outage that briefly left about 5,300 homes and businesses without power in Clairemont Mesa and adjacent Kearny Mesa.
The blackout began shortly before 11:30 a.m., San Diego Gas & Electric reported.
Emergency crews arrived to find a portable shade tarp with attached metal legs on top of transmission wires over an alley off the 4600 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, near Frink Avenue, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. It was unclear how the sunshade got there.
Utility crews had power restored to all the affected areas within an hour, SDG&E spokeswoman Gina Jacobs said.
The mishap caused no reported injuries.
