CARLSBAD - A 31-year-old man who told his family that he wanted to kill himself, and said he was ready for a violent confrontation with police, prompted a SWAT response.
The incident began around 11:30 p.m. Monday in the 7100 block of Sitio Bahia in Carlsbad.
The man's mother and brother called police to report that he had threatened to hurt himself and others. The man had also reportedly been drinking and had also taken a large amount of prescription medication. Adding to the family's fear was that he was hiding in his bedroom where he kept firearms.
SWAT was called to the scene and a crisis negotiation began. Police made numerous attempts to communicate with the man, but he wasn't talking.
Shortly after 1 a.m., police set off a diversionary flash-bang grenade and officers were able to take the man into custody without further incident. No one was injured.
