LA MESA, Calif. - The first Walmart Neighborhood Market in San Diego County opens its doors Wednesday.
The Walmart is located in a building formerly occupied by Circuit City on 8820 Grossmont Boulevard in La Mesa. A Walmart representative said the store will create 65 part- and full-time jobs.
The building is 39,000 square feet and features a full market and pharmacy.
"The new Walmart Neighborhood Market will be another valued member of our business community, and many of our residents are looking forward to its grand opening and the employment opportunities it brings to La Mesa," said La Mesa Mayor Art Madrid. "Walmart has been a good corporate citizen to many of our civic and nonprofit organizations, and I'm confident that this new store will continue to be a good community partner."
Oftentimes, when a new Walmart is built, protests are not too far behind. Community members were outraged over a Walmart Neighborhood Market on Imperial Avenue because of its location at the old Farmers Market building.
"We are proud to be opening during the year that Walmart celebrates the 50th anniversary of its first store opening," said store manager Todd Raley. "We look forward to serving the people of our community, helping save them money so they can live better."
The La Mesa location will host a grand opening celebration Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. It will open to the public at 8 a.m.
