Michelle Obama toured a community farm in San Diego Thursday to promote her campaign to end childhood obesity. The first lady was joined by two of the farmers at the New Roots Community Farm in City Heights during the tour, then discussed the importance of making healthy foods more readily available."Healthy children come from a place, a place that is a healthy community," Obama said. "If a family lives in a neighborhood with a grocery store nearby, it is simple, they are more likely to put fresh fruits and vegetables on the table because they will have access to it."Announced at the event was a partnership between Obama's "Let's Move!" campaign and The California Endowment's Building Healthy Communities Initiative, a $100 million effort to improve the health of people in 14 communities across the state over the next 10 years. The initiative works to get healthy food into schools, enhance safety at parks, reduce children's exposure to exhaust, create bike lanes, establish education programs to reduce tobacco, alcohol and drug use, recruit career mentors and make sure children have a healthy home.Dr. Robert Ross, the organization's president, said the first lady's "attention on the issue of obesity and the health of our children has put rocket fuel under the very issue that The California Endowment's Building Healthy Communities is designed to address.""Where we live profoundly affects our health, it determines the quality of our lives and those of our children," he said. "Simply put, if we can make our places healthier, we will make our people healthier."Obama's "Let's Move!" campaign seeks to improve nutrition, encourage healthy eating and ensure access to fresh and affordable foods. Her stop in San Diego comes on the final leg of her first solo foreign trip as first lady.Earlier this week, she traveled to Haiti, where she toured the devastation from January's earthquake. Obama then flew to Mexico, where she met with Margarita Zavala, wife of Mexican President Felipe Calderon, toured the National Museum of Anthropology and visited with school children in Mexico City.
