SAN DIEGO - The first baby born in San Diego County in 2013 arrived at the stroke of midnight.
For such a tiny baby, Nathan Ryu already knows how to make a big entrance. At the stroke of midnight on Tuesday, he officially became the first baby born in the county in 2013.
"I hope he will be happy and healthy," said Nathan's father, Eun Ryu.
Nathan seemed very happy and did not let out a peep during a Tuesday morning news conference in the lobby of Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. He weighed in at 6 pounds, 4 ounces and was 20 inches long.
Nathan's parents are Korean immigrants who now live in the UTC area. His father is a computer scientist, but you wouldn't know it when he described watching his first child being born.
"I think it's sort of a miracle," he said.
Nathan's name also has a special meaning.
''I think the name means a gift from God, so we wanted to choose his name from the Bible," said Nathan's father.
Nathan's proud parents, who are both in their 30s, now plan to have more children.
"Oh, yes," said Ryu. "Maybe two more?"
Perhaps Miji Lee, Nathan's mother, should answer that question. But after enduring hours of labor, she is also all smiles.
"I'm so happy," she said.
