SAN DIEGO - Firefighters are investigating Monday how a blaze broke out in the kitchen of Babbo's Bar and Grille in University Heights.
The fire was reported at 1:30 a.m. in the 4100 block of Park Boulevard.
Bystanders told the San Diego Fire and Rescue Department that they saw smoke billowing from the building.
10News has learned that the fire may have started in the kitchen and would have gutted the entire building if it wasn't for a sprinkler system.
About 10 fire units responded to the scene and crews punched holes in the ceiling to let the smoke out.
They were able to knock down the blaze in about 18 minutes. An apartment next door to the restaurant was evacuated but no one was injured.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
