A brush fire of unknown origin blackened about seven open acres Tuesday in the rugged southeastern reaches of San Diego County.

The non-injury blaze began spreading southeast of Morena Reservoir in the Potrero area shortly before 1 p.m., according to Cal Fire.

Ground personnel who had to hike into the remote site near Picnic Lake Park fought the flames with help from crews aboard two air tankers and two helicopters, said Mike Mohler, a fire captain with the state agency. It took them about an hour to get the blaze under control.

The fire was never a threat to structures. The nearest homes are a mile or more away from the burned terrain, according to Mohler.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
