Firefighters Knock Down Brush Fire Near SR-163

Firefighters on Friday extinguished a brush fire near state Route 163, fire officials said.

Smoke was spotted billowing from the roadside about 12:10 p.m. north of University Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Fire investigators were called out to determine the cause of the blaze that was believed to have started in a homeless encampment, a San Diego Fire- Rescue Department dispatcher said. No injuries were reported, she said.

The onramps from University Avenue and Washington Street to northbound Route 163 were temporarily blocked, but were reported clear shortly before 1 p.m., the CHP reported on its website.
