Fire rips through Carlsbad garage

CARLSBAD - Propane tanks and ammunition exploded during a fire that broke out in the garage of a home in Carlsbad early Wednesday morning.

The fire was reported at about 2 a.m. in the area of Pannonia Road and Coastline Avenue.  Carlsbad Fire Department crews arrived to find the garage engulfed in flames, with several large explosions from propane tanks inside.

"I heard a lot of like popping and what I thought was like bottles being thrown,” neighbor Brandon Manguso told 10News. “I didn't know until I came out and saw the huge fire."

An elderly couple who live in the home escaped safely with their dog.

Two cars inside the garage were destroyed. Crews were able to keep the blaze from spreading to the home.

The damage is estimated at more than $100,000, a Carlsbad Fire battalion chief said. The cause is under investigation.
