NATIONAL CITY, Calif. - Crews battled a fire that ripped through a grocery store in National City Tuesday.
The blaze was reported at about 1 a.m. at a Big Ben Market located the 100 block of E 8th Street.
Responding firefighters found the building's roof engulfed in heavy smoke and flames
The fire was mostly contained to the second floor, an area used for storage and as office spaces. Crews said the fire was harder to get to because of its location.
"It was tough to get to the scene of the fire, primarily most of the fire was on the second floor coming through the roof, " said Battalion Chief Larry Silva with the National City Fire Department.
Nick Salem, owner of Big Ben Market, told 10News that the grocery store has been part of the community for about 60 years. He also said that he had been working to remodel the store and had already invested between $800,000 to $900,000 in the project.
"We'll be back," Salem said about rebuilding.
