Crews douse brush fire near Plaza Bonita

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. - Crews were able to stop the spread of a fire that broke out in a homeless camp near Plaza Bonita Monday morning.

The fire and subsequent heavy smoke was reported just off northbound Interstate 805 near state Route 54 at about 10:45 a.m.

Authorities said the fire was sparked in a homeless camp among the brush.

It took crews just under an hour to douse the flames, which charred about half an acre.

No injuries were immediately reported.

The fire is under investigation.
