SAN DIEGO - Three people were transported to the hospital Saturday after an explosion and fire at an apartment in Point Loma.
The incident was reported just after 2:30 p.m. in the 2100 block of Chatsworth Boulevard, near Voltaire Street. Firefighters were able to knock down the fire in about 20 minutes.
A man painting inside a bathroom on the second floor when the explosion occurred suffered burn injuries was taken to the hospital. A San Diego police officer who tried to help the man was transported for smoke inhalation, and a female resident who reported feeling dizzy was also taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
Firefighters say one apartment sustained heavy damage, with smoke damage in several other units and hallways.
The Red Cross is helping 20 to 25 people find a temporary place to stay.
