Fire forces residents to evacuate from El Cortez high-rise in downtown San Diego

SAN DIEGO - Firefighters responded to reports of a fire at the El Cortez condominiums in downtown San Diego early Saturday.

The incident was reported in the 700 block of Ash Street at about 7:15 a.m. Investigators say the unintentional fire began inside a kitchen in one of the condos.

Firefighters had to evacuate some of the residents from the fifth floor.

Some condos sustained water damage, which is estimated to be about $11,000. No one was injured.

The historic El Cortez, built in 1927, is a landmark in downtown San Diego.
