The blaze in the 16000 block of Mimosa Place was reported shortly after 6:30 a.m., said Julie Taber, a spokeswoman for Rancho Santa Fire Fire Protection District.

It took crews from four North County emergency-services agencies about 45 minutes to fully douse the flames, which were confined to the attic of the 4,500-square-foot Spanish-style house, Taber said.

The personnel were able to rescue a pet cat from the single-story residence but found the canine dead inside, she said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
