CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A two-alarm fire tore through an apartment building near Otay Valley Regional Park this afternoon, displacing more than a half-dozen people.
The non-injury blaze in the 300 block of Zenith Street in Chula Vista erupted about 3:15 p.m., Deputy Fire Chief Jim Garcia said. It took crews about 20 minutes to subdue the flames, which caused heavy damage to two downstairs units and one on the second floor of the two-story building.
Officials say a woman was in the kitchen making French fries on the stove and poured out a large amount of oil, causing large flames that spread to the wooden cupboard above.
Six units had to be evacuated and everyone was able to get out safely.
The American Red Cross was called in to help eight to 10 residents arrange for interim lodging, Garcia said.
