LEMON GROVE, Calif. - An investigation was under way Monday into a fire that severely damaged a barber shop in Lemon Grove.
The fire at Angel Veez Barber Shop at 7435 Broadway was reported at 11:38 p.m. Sunday, according to San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Luis Chavez.
The shop was severely damaged by flames and smoke, the sergeant said in a statement.
Witnesses told 10News they believe the fire was started by a group of homeless people who live behind the barber shop.
Firefighters knocked the flames down in about 30 minutes. The back end of the shop was gutted and there was smoke damage throughout the building.
An adjoining nail salon business also sustained heavy smoke damage, said city of El Cajon and Heartland Fire & Rescue spokeswoman Monica Zech, adding total damage from the fire was estimated at $150,000.
Officials detained a few people for questioning. No injuries were reported.
The Sheriff's Department's bomb/arson unit was heading up the investigation, Chavez said.
