Festival Of Sail returns to San Diego
8th Annual But Many Firsts This Year
Last Updated: 99 days ago
SAN DIEGO - The eighth annual Festival of Sail arrived in splendid fashion as some 17 tall ships made their way into San Diego Bay.
The festival has been expanded this year with more ships and more room on Harbor Drive.
"We were able to get permission from the Port [of San Diego] to close off two lanes of northbound traffic to not only accommodate more vendors, but to put of a stage for entertainment, beer garden area and more," said Robyn Gallant with the San Diego Maritime Museum.
The festival is one of the main fundraisers for the museum, with proceeds helping to maintain the maritime fleet.
Another first is the admission price -- it has been lowered to $5.
"We wanted to not only attract more people to the waterfront, but make it more affordable for families," said Museum Director Ray Ashley.
There will be a number of sailings and gun battles between ships over the four-day run.
Gates open Friday at 9 a.m.
