PINE VALLEY, Calif. - Federal agents found nearly 24 pounds of crystal methamphetamine worth more than $350,000 hidden in a car's dashboard at a Border Patrol checkpoint in Pine Valley, authorities announced Thursday.
The discovery was made as a 34-year-old man arrived at the checkpoint in a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse around 6:30 a.m. Monday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
A drug-sniffing dog alerted agents to the drugs after the driver, a Mexican national, "displayed suspicious behaviors and was referred to secondary inspection," according to a CBP statement.
Twenty-one bundles of crystal meth weighing 23.55 pounds and worth an estimated $353,250 was found hidden in the dashboard of the vehicle, authorities said.
The suspected smuggler was taken into custody. His name was not released.
