At about 4:30 p.m., the man -- who was identified as Joseph Ramirez -- took his family to Mount Hope Cemetery in the 3700 block of Market Street, according to San Diego police Officer David Stafford.

The man said he heard voices in his head telling him to sacrifice the boy, then allegedly took a piece of glass from a broken candle and slashed the inside of both of his son's forearms, Stafford said. He then turned the glass on himself, cutting open both his forearms, Stafford said.

Officers arrived and took the man into custody. Stafford said he was taken to a hospital to be treated, but would be booked into jail on suspicion of child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon.

The boy was taken to Rady Children's Hospital to be treated, Stafford said.
