SAN DIEGO -
Authorities Monday are investigating a fatal crash that occurred the day before on northbound Interstate 5 near Del Mar Heights Road.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department crews responded to a report of a crash and found a vehicle that apparently ran off the road and fell some 200 feet below the freeway. Rescuers found one person dead at the scene.
The victim was identified only as a Hispanic man in his mid-30s, according to California Highway Patrol officials.
Authorities are continuing to investigate how the crash occurred, but said the incident likely happened on Sunday.
Additionally, the location presented a challenge during the investigation.
"It is a steep incline to get up and down," said CHP Sgt. Armando Casas. "It is pretty dangerous [and] steep; somebody could fall."
Debris and car parts were scattered throughout the hillside, although it was not clear how fast the driver was going before he crashed.
CHP said crews found identification in the vehicle, but will not release the identity until next of kin is notified.
