CREST, Calif. - A 45-year-old El Cajon man was killed Friday when he crashed his motorcycle on a rural East County road and was struck by an oncoming SUV.

The rider lost control of his eastbound 1996 Suzuki two-wheeler for unknown reasons about 6:45 a.m. on Dehesa Road, near Willow Glen Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.

He fell onto the roadway and slid into the path of a westbound 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe, CHP public affairs Officer Brian Pennings said. The driver of the SUV, a 76-year-old El Cajon resident, hit his brakes and swerved, but was unable to steer clear of the rider and his motorcycle.

Crews extricated the victim, but the person died at the scene. No other vehicles were involved. His name was withheld pending family notification.

Video from Sky10 early Friday showed that the accident took place at a sharp and steep curve.

10News learned that the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet and that the driver of the SUV and his wife were unhurt.

Investigators said the driver of the SUV is not facing any charges.

"He did everything he could to avoid the collision," said Pennings. "But unfortunately was unsuccessful."

Police said the County Medical Examiner's Office is working to determine whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.

Officers closed the roadway for several hours to allow for investigations and cleanup.
