Man struck, killed while trying to cross northbound I-805 in National City area

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. - A vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian on Interstate 805 in the South Bay Thursday.

The fatality occurred about 9:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the freeway, near Plaza Boulevard in National City, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The male victim, whose identity was not immediately available, died at the scene. 10News learned that the victim was a transient and was hit as he tried to walk across the freeway.

A female driver told authorities that she tried to avoid the collision but could not.

Traffic was heavy in the area for nearly two hours while authorities investigated and removed the body from the roadway, the CHP reported.
