SAN DIEGO - A motorist was killed Wednesday when a car crashed off Interstate 5 in University City, went down an embankment and hit a tree.
The northbound sedan careened off the freeway for unknown reasons just south of Nobel Drive shortly after 2 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver died at the scene.
The CHP told 10News no other cars were involved.
"Looks like he went off the road onto the embankment, possibly got airborne and into the trees," said Kevin Rinehart, who is with the CHP.
The accident created heavy congestion along a stretch of the commuter route, the CHP reported.
Traffic was backed up for three hours as towing crews struggled to pry the car out from two trees. The fire department had to cut the car open just to reach the driver, who was wearing his seatbelt.
"But with the impact he had with the tree, it wouldn't have mattered," said Rinehart.
