Fatal collision reported on east SR-78 near Las Posas Road

OCEANSIDE, Calif. - A wrong-way car collided with another vehicle on eastbound state Route 78 in San Marcos Monday, killing both drivers, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The crash occurred at 2:58 a.m. and involved two vehicles -- a 2001 PT Cruiser and a 1997 Nissan Maxima.
Both vehicles were badly damaged, the PT Cruiser overturned and ended up in a ditch about 150 yards away from the Nissan. The front of the Nissan Maxima was smashed in. Authorities shut down multiple lanes on the highway for about one hour.
Both drivers involved were female. The driver of the PT Cruiser died at the scene and the driver of the Nissan Maxima was taken to Palomar Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The names of the drivers killed were not immediately released.
According to the medical examiner's office, the Nissan was traveling in the wrong direction on the eastbound lanes of SR-78.
A Sig Alert was issued just after 4 a.m. and was lifted at 5:12 a.m.
