The fire started downstairs on a table in the home in the 4600 block of Savona Place, according to firefighters.

All four family members were asleep upstairs and had to run through thick black smoke to escape from the fire.

A 4-year-old boy was seen having a hard time breathing at the scene and was taken by ambulance to UCSD Medical Center. His parents and younger sister were also transported.

Firefighters on scene said the family’s home was under construction and it was possible that materials from the construction caused the fire.

The investigation into the cause of the fire continued Tuesday morning.
