Family mourns father killed in wrong-way crash

Other driver may have been suicidal

LAKESIDE - Doug Menegos was killed Friday afternoon while driving home to his family on the SR-67 in Lakeside. His family is grieving his loss and told us they still can’t believe he is gone.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 29-year-old Trista Stier was driving her silver Ford F-150 on the Winter Gardens Boulevard off-ramp against traffic when she made a beeline across the highway for the number one lane.

Investigators say Menegos was driving his white utility truck towing a trailer and swerved to avoid Stier, but the two collided head-on and both vehicles spun across the eastbound lanes until they stopped in the center lane seconds later.

Both drivers died of traumatic injuries at the hospital.

10News spoke with a CHP investigator on this case and he told us that after speaking with Stier’s family they are investigating this as a possible suicide.

The Menegos family started a GoFundMe page to help raise money for funeral and memorial costs. They are hoping to raise $15,000. On the page friends have left heartfelt messages like these:

“Doug was a great guy. I will miss him as will the world”

“Doug was a devoted family man who was taken way to soon.”

“We are absolutely heartbroken over the loss of Doug. He was such a good man, and loved his family. Our prayers are with his beautiful family!”

"One of the nicest guys I've known. I am honored to have call Doug a colleague, but more importantly a Friend. My condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy.”
