Ex-girlfriend of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev speaks out

Nadine Ascencao interviewed by 'Inside Edition'

The ex-girlfriend of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev describes him as abusive and mean.

Nadine Ascencao, 24, was in a secret relationship from 2006-2009 with Tsarnaev. The two dated for three years and could not tell anyone about their relationship because Ascencao is not Muslim.

"I can't believe he would do this," Ascencao told "Inside Edition" as tears rolled down her face.

She has a hard time believing that the man she used to love could be the mastermind behind the Boston Marathon bombings.

"I can't think about that," said Ascencao. "It drives me insane to think about that."

Ascencao said she watched Tsarnsaev go from a fun-loving party boy to an Islamic-obsessed young man, buying Islamic magazines and pushing for her to read them.

"We stopped sleeping together, because he said it was a sin," she said. "He started praying five times a day. I never see him praying. He told me once, 'You know who runs America? The Jews run America.'"

The two split in 2009 after a fight which led to Tsarnaev being arrested.

"He literally grabbed my jaw and pushed me until I hit the car and he slapped me across the face," said Ascencao.

Tsarnaev was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and battery but never faced a judge after Ascencao never pressed charges, which is a decision she regrets.

"No, I do but at the time, I was young and I didn’t really think it through," said Ascencao.
