Escondido hit-run driver plows into front yard

ESCONDIDO - Troopers are attempting to track down the hit-and-run driver who struck a car and then crashed into a front yard in unincorporated Escondido Thursday night.

California Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred just before 6 p.m. on State Route 78, near 17th Street.

The pickup truck hit a car, then lost control and plowed right through the front yard fence of a home. The driver took off running. Arriving troopers said they found beer cans in his car.

Longtime homeowner Adarsh Baweja ran outside when he heard the fire trucks.

"I was really surprised at what happened; I would never think that somebody would come right into a fence, and the vehicle was right here," Baweja said.

There were no serious injuries. Traffic was blocked for nearly three hours while both cars were towed away and CHP searched the area unsuccessfully for the suspect.

"I'm lucky it didn't hit the house, it stopped right there," Baweja said.
