SAN DIEGO - Authorities in Escondido arrested a teenager who they said was at the center of a lockdown at an area high school Thursday.
Capt. Michael Loarie with the Escondido Police Department said the 17-year-old was arrested at his home without incident.
Escondido High School, on at 1535 N. Broadway, was placed on lockdown from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. after authorities received a report of a man on the campus possibly wearing a mask and carrying a rifle.
Officers searched the campus for the suspicious individual, but officers were unable to track him down.
Detectives investigating the report said they developed leads and began to focus on a juvenile they believed was involved in the original call.
According to Loarie, it became apparent that there never was a man on the campus with a gun and that the original caller had made the story up.
Loarie said the teen was charged with filing a false report of an emergency.
