SAN DIEGO - The San Diego County coast was in store for elevated surf Sunday and Monday that could lead to dangerous rip currents and minor beach erosion, forecasters said.

Surf of mostly between 4 and 6 feet was expected on exposed west-facing beaches, with local set of up to 8 feet south of Del Mar, according to the National Weather Service. The highest surf was expected Sunday.

"The elevated surf and the long period of the swells will result in stronger and more persistent rip currents, increasing the dangers to swimmers," the NWS advisory said. "Minor beach erosion could also result."

NWS forecasters attributed the elevated surf heights and stronger rip currents to a long period swell generated by a storm off the coast of Japan that was expected to continue Sunday into Monday, then slowly lower Monday afternoon into Tuesday.
