National City burglar shooed away by 90-year-old homeowner; victim says thief took her jewelry

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. - An elderly National City woman who woke up to a burglar trying to enter her home speaks to 10News about her ordeal.
Several rooms in Hazel Vogel's home were ransacked during the break-in.
Vogel told 10News that she had gone to bed and didn't know she was being burglarized until the intruder reached her bedroom.
Police said the thief got away, but not before pocketing her wedding ring and a pearl necklace that her late husband had given her.
"He got all my jewelry, apparently. Of course he didn't find any money -- I suppose that's why he was trying another room," she said.
Vogel said she can't walk too well at 90 years old, but her voice is still strong.
"I yelled, 'Who's at my door?' because I heard the rattling and that's when he took off," she said.
Vogel then called 911 and waited for police.
When police arrived, they removed the screen to her bedroom window, in an attempt to rescue her from the possibly occupied home.
"He wanted to know if I could climb out the window and I told him I couldn't because of my leg so he said, 'Alright,' he would climb in," said Vogel.
The officer crawled in as a police helicopter circled overhead and stayed with her while other officers and a police dog searched the house and neighborhood.
The home, where Vogel has lived for the last 60 years, was repaired.
Anyone with information about the incident was urged to call National City police at 619-336-4411.
