CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A young man accused in a shoplifting attempt in which a shot was fired was taken into custody following a police search that forced two nearby schools to lock down Friday morning.

Shortly after 8:30 a.m., a lockdown was initiated at Eastlake High School (1120 Eastlake Pkwy.) and Olympic View Elementary School (1220 S. Greenview Dr.) after police responded to reports of gunfire at the Walgreens store on 1430 Eastlake Parkway.

Chula Vista police said 18-year-old Christian Olmos tried purchasing alcohol and then attempted to leave the store with the products after being confronted by a store employee. During the confrontation, police said the man pulled out a handgun and fired at least one shot at the store and fled the scene.

Officers tracked down Olmos at the nearby Rancho Buena Vista apartment complex and arrested him. Police said officers found a 9mm handgun in his possession.

Due to the proximity of the police activity, officials at both schools locked down the campuses. The lockdowns were lifted about 30 minutes later.

No injuries were reported.

Olmos was booked in county jail and faces charges of robbery, residential burglary and assault with a deadly weapon.
