Dynamite at Oceanside home prompts evacuations

OCEANSIDE, Calif. - The discovery of what appeared to be three sticks of dynamite in the garage of an Oceanside residence Wednesday prompted precautionary evacuations of nearby homes as bomb-squad personnel worked to safety remove the possibly dangerous devices.

Someone cleaning out the rental house in the 600 block of Garfield Street made an emergency call about 9:45 a.m. to report finding the suspected explosives, according to police.

The cylindrical objects appeared to be fairly old, raising concern that any chemicals inside them might be hazardously unstable, Lt. Val Sadaat said.

Officers summoned a sheriff's bomb squad and evacuated about a dozen surrounding residences, the lieutenant said. The objects were safely removed and no one was injured.
