SAN DIEGO - Experts on unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly called "drones," are scheduled to appear at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center Sunday for UAV - Unmanned Aerial Vehicle - Day.
This event in Balboa Park brings local engineers, scientists and inventors together for a look at unmanned flight. Displays, lectures and workshops on drone technology are included.
Lectures will cover history, development of unmanned aircraft and its civil integration, current Federal Aviation Administration restrictions on commercial use and positive applications being developed for UAVs and quadcopters.
San Diego is considered a major hub of drone technology, as both General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and Northrop Grumman are located here.
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems builds the Predator and Reaper UAVs that target terrorists around the world and Northrop Grumman manufactures the Global Hawk surveillance drones.
Other local companies engage in drone research and development and supply parts.
While the public is generally supportive of the use of military drones overseas, opposition to domestic UAV surveillance has grown in the past several years. More than 30 states have been considering restrictions on drone use.
The event at the Fleet is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
