Driver tased after North County high-speed chase

CARLSBAD - A man who reportedly led officers on a high-speed pursuit down Interstate 5, from Orange County to Carlsbad, is in custody after he was tased by officers while trying to get into his home.

The incident began at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when California Highway Patrol troopers tried to pull over a Mercedes sedan for speeding on I-5 south in San Juan Capistrano.

According to CHP Sgt. Ken Perez, the driver refused to stop and chase ensued, winding its way down to Oceanside. The car was traveling at speeds between 65 and 100 miles per hour, Perez said.

Eventually the driver pulled off at the La Costa Avenue exit in Carlsbad. He pulled into his driveway and tried to go into his house.

CHP troopers and a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department K-9 deputy tried to take him into custody, but he resisted. The troopers then tasered him, Perez said.

The man was taken to a hospital for evaluation, and was then expected to be booked into jail on drunken driving charges.
