SAN DIEGO - A 41-year-old man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of drunken driving in connection with a crash in Linda Vista that left another motorist dead, police said.
The crash occurred shortly after midnight, when a southbound 2001 Toyota pickup truck plowed into a westbound 1994 Mazda sedan at Tait Street and Linda Vista Road, according to San Diego police.
The driver of the Mazda, 27-year-old David Benito, died at the scene. Medics took his 19-year-old brother, who had been riding in the vehicle, to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment of apparently non-life threatening injuries, SDPD public affairs Lt. Kevin Mayer said.
The truck's driver, Matthew Tyler Kim, 41, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.
Kim was booked into San Diego Central Jail and was being held without bail pending an arraignment scheduled for Monday.
Benito and his brother had just returned from a visit to Mexico and were several blocks from their home when the wreck occurred, Mayer said.
Preliminary evidence indicated that the suspect, who also lives in Linda Vista, ran a red light at the road crossing, though the accident remained under investigation, according to Mayer.
